Bliss in Ko Phangan
On our last afternoon in Bangkok we very spontanously decided to attend an intensive Yoga workshop starting the next day on the island of Ko Phangan. We came up with the idea, as our friend Eugenia (who we met three years ago in Fiji) has finally settled down in Ko Phangan as a yoga teacher after having been traveling for a couple of years. Hence, we rebooked our flight, arrived super early on the island of Ko Samui and then took a ferry to its little sister Ko Phangan. And there we were in the Yoga Hall at 8:30am with all our luggage right on time for the first class. And really – somehow unexpected – everything on the island felt good right away. So good that after a week, we decided to extend our stay for one more week.. 🙂
Thailand is an extremely cheap travel destination, we are amazed how everything, whether food or accommodation cost so little, especially now at low season..as an example we pay for our scooter 2.50€ a day (while we painfully remember the outragous daily scooter rate of 50€ in French Polynesia..). Ko Phangan itself is actually famous for its full-moon parties. We not only saw one full moon here, but also one day while having lunch, we saw a tornedo!
After five months of almost continuous traveling, we have to admit that we really enjoy the scheduled but calm days with Yoga the whole morning and evening. The school itself is amazing with students from all over the world. And even though we definitely have no experience whatsoever with the “Yogi culture”, we quickly felt related to their spirit. The school not only teaches the typical Hatha Yoga postures called “asanas”, but also gives you a lot of theoretical background of what Yoga is- not only the stretching part, but also the concentration of the mind, almost as in meditation, is important. You stay in one “asana posture” for many, many minutes (or at least it feels like it!)..and believe me, this is so incredibly hard – physical-wise but especially mind-wise to stay focused. Anyway, our healthy life style here with lot of swimming, Yoga, no alcohol, very good Thai food, warm temperature and nice people feels perfect. Funny, how little can make you happy..
