Raiatea & Taha’a

“Raiatea” is the second largest island of the Society Group after Tahiti with 12.000 habitants. Except for its busy capital Uturoa where all public services as hospital and secondary schools for all surrounding islands are located, Raiatea is still pretty calm. On our tour around the island we did not meet one tourist and passed through quiet, quiet local villages. Raiatea is actually our island as it means “The Grand Voyage”!

Very close by there is its little sister island called “Taha’a” where most people make their living by fishing. As both islands are enclosed by the same coral reef, we circled Tahaa by boat on a one-day excursion where we also saw manta-rays, small whitetip and blacktip sharks…
