carry-on around the world in six months

Back home!

After 180 wonderful days once around the world in 18 different countries we finally arrived at Frankfurt’s airport and made it back home again!

In retrospect, we have seen, experienced and learned so much over the last six months!

Here a few Florian & Martina travel facts:

We..

• took 41 flights and 2 scenic flights (helicopter and cessna)

• hired 5 cars (in argentina, usa, cook island, french polynesia and namibia) and 8 scooters (in cook island, french polynesia and thailand)

• stayed in 80 different (hotel) beds; cheapest night 5€ (ABC teahouse trek)..ooh, no actually 0€ (barn in Bolivian highlands after getting snowed in), most expensive night 200€ (Namib desert lodge)

• breathed at -3m (snorkling) up to 5000m above sea level

• took 15.000 photos of the world around us

• had 2 sick days (Martina)

• sent 5 packages home with excess clothing/ souvenirs from Brasil (personal delivery through amiga Dani), from USA, 2x Japan and Nepal

• lost on the way a broken camera, 3 credit cards (in ATM), a sleeping mask, one of Florian’s hightech cable, Martina’s flipflops (eaten by the Pacific ocean) and sunglasses

• had 27 different sim cards & local numbers

• dropped following countries from our original itinerary: Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Botswana, Mauritius, Reunion

Best city: Rio de Janeiro, Salta, La Paz, Quito, Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, Kathmandu

Best nature: Foz de Iguacu, Fitz Roy and Perito Moreno glacier, Salta’s Valles Calchaquies, Bolivian highlands and Salar de Uyuni, Joshua Tree Nationalpark, Bora Bora, Mount Fuji, Poon Hill in Nepal, Namib desert

Best ocean: Bora Bora

Best pool: at ‘Villa Bela Vista’ Jericoacoara, ‘Loews resort’ San Diego, Infinity pool at ‘Lamai Wanta’ Ko Samui and ‘Coast Hotel’ Ko Phangan

Best beach: Itacare, Trancoso, Bottle beach on Ko Phangan, Honeymoon island near Aitutaki

Best wildlife: Galapagos (bluefooted booby), Etosha Nationalpark (desert elephants and giraffes), Underwater world Bora Bora (manta rays)

Best co-traveler: Pat & Rick from Canada

Best food: Argentina, La Paz, Quito, Copacabana, French Polynesia, Thailand, Joburg, Windhoek

Best audiobook: ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ by Mitch Albom

Best massage: foot massage at Bangkok airport

Most repeated restaurants: Flying sushi bar at Kyoto train station, Benjamin’s Hut in Ko Phangan

Worst value for money: Shabi-Shabi restaurant Tokyo (80€ p/person)

Worst financial experience: trying to change Argentinian pesos in Bolivia without loosing 50% of the money..

Most expensive travel days: Galapagos (on boat), Bhutan

Good-bye trip! Our long journey is over, but all the incredible experiences in terms of nature, people, culture, languages and cuisine stay with us; we will always keep them in our mind and heart!!

Home safe and sound. Sad news, I’ll miss your blog. Loved your photos and descriptions of your travels. Enjoyed your recap. Truth be known, we enjoyed you both more then you’ll ever know!
