As soon as we arrived in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital, we hear German language everywhere, read German shop signs and typical dishes on the menu, like ‘Wienerschnitzel’ and ‘Apfelstrudel’ – a somehow very weird sensation knowing that we are in the middle of Namibia and not Germany!

Generally, Namibia’s official language is English, but we learn that many people also speak one of the Afrikaans dialects and quite a few also German- as Namibia became German colony in 1884 for around 30 years..Windhoek itself actually has the size of Bonn with around 320,000 habitants, while whole Namibia has a small total population of as little as 2.1mio.

When we arrived at the airport, we firstly received some proper instructions of how to use our new companion, a huge 4x4wheel Toyota Hilux – Florian calls it simply “Panzer” – and especially learn how to change the tires in case of emergency… Later in town, we stayed overnight at a lovely small hotel and had a fabulous dinner (again steak :-), also prices for a decent accommodation and food in Namibia are pretty acceptable. Some of the accommodations, actually all lodges in National Parks, we had to prebook here in Windhoek in the National park’s main office. Luckily it is just the beginning of high-season, so we were able to reserve the last rooms still at last minute..

Windhoek itself is a nice town with lots of shops and some quite “German” attractions as the Lutheran church ‘Christuskirche’, three small castles and many beergarden. As we are particularly interested in Namibia’s landscape and wildlife nature, the next day we started our roadtrip after buying lots of water and food at the local supermarket..
