We rented a scooter on our second day on Moorea (for 50€/day…French Polynesia is incredibly expensive) to drive the 80km around the island. There we realized that Moorea is pleasantly even more laid-back than we thought yesterday after arriving. It actually does not feel very touristy at all. Well, apart from the luxury resorts which we all visited to have a look and take photos, the island has little accommodation, a few shops, very few restaurants/ snack bars and that’s it! We also noticed that places have been shut down, as French Polynesia tourism is suffering more than any other tourist destination in the South Pacific due to the financial crisis since 2008. It is easy to get accommodation, however prices are still quite high! But one thing the French know is cooking and eating. Food is delicious! Especially the “poisson cru”- raw tuna sashimi – which is served everywhere, is amazing…we have it every day to slowly get used to Japanese food! 🙂 Today we fly over to our next island “Huahine” and very much hope the weather will improve soon as it has been raining with thunderstorms most of yesterday..
